Documentary on the history of biological warfare, focusing on British origins, the secret US program, the Japanese Unit 731, and a group of Seventh Day Adventist conscientious objectors who served as human subjects on germ tests.

The Archival challenges on this project were great, requiring persistent Freedom of Information Acts requests and finding extremely rare materials in the private collections of amateur historians and stashed away in the basements of retired government scientists.

The National Archives had material that was no longer classified, but it was vaguely catalogued and appears not to have been seen since its retirement from active use. Among this footage was an obscure “Q Fever” test in the Utah desert. It was too short to use on its own, but it was integrated with – and used as reference for – the desert re-creation scene.
